different challenge for the budding golfer

LA FINCA
Located about 15
kilometers inland of the town of Torrevieja and 4
kilometers from the small town of Algorfa.
This is a bit of a
challenging 18 hole course. Set in a fantastic setting,
if you have the time to look up from your ball you can
take in the full impact of the surrounding mountains in
all their glory. The course itself is a championship
course built and designed by Jose Gancedo in 2002, its
hilly in places and has a rolling landscape, the wind
can effect your game as it blows hard where the course
is raised.

QUESADA
Known better as La
Marquesa you will find this interesting course set in a
valley 18 holes regarded as a White Card, flat with very
wide fairways without that many obstacles. A few canals
do cross the course that is there to take the water from
the surrounding hills
but there is enough
space to aim for to avoid them. The course was designed
by Justo Quesada in the late 80s, and was opened in
1989.
Par 72, 5990 meters
from the yellow and 5094 from the red tee.
Green fee is 55 Euros

ton your game to enjoy. Opened as far back as 1972 by
Paul Pulman?

LAS RAMBLAS
Go in land from the
beach of Campoamor and you will not only find this fine
course but next to it you have the fablus campoamor
course, 2 for the price of one.
Las Ramblas is
regarded as probably the most difficult in the area.
Narrow with many trees, some say too many add to that
the traps that have been designed to be difficult and
you have the makings of a hard day out on the course.
The advise from those who have gone before is bring a
lot of extra balls you will need them. The rolling
landscape makes for easy and enjoyable walking, most
though take a buggy as they spend so much time looking
for their balls.
Opened in 1991 by
Jose Gancedo the same as La Finca
Par 71, 5679 meters
from the yellow and 4761from the red tee.
Green fee is 50 Euros
(it’s cheaper than the other courses to help pay for the
balls)

CAMPOAMOR
Campoamor has a lot
to offer on and off the course. The fantastic new
clubhouse stands like a monument on top of the hill at
the centre of the complex. This area has been built with
the needs of the golfer in mined from start to finish.
From the club house you should take time out to take in
the view, 100 meters above sea level you are able to see
Santa Pola from the north to La Manga in the south and
the mediterranion sea in the middle.
The wide fairways and
large greens of this course makes it very popular and
isn’t regarded as that hard to play, but can hold a few
surprises. If you have a handicap of 10 or 28 you will
still have a good day out.
The area is
developing all the time with a new 18 hole course being
built and many new apartments in the complex going up
all the time, if you are golf mad you don’t have to
leave the resort.
Designed by Carmelo
Garcia and opened in 1989
Par 72, 6056 meters
from the yellow and 5094 from the red tee.
Green fee is 40 Euros
for women and 43 Euros for men.

El Pirata Golf Society 29
November 2006
On 29th Novenber we had a different format to
our normal Stableford Competition. We changed to a Texas Scramble which
according to the feedback was very successful. The course was undergoing a lot
of work on the greens and tees which meant it was not in prime condition. The
weather was overcast with a slight breeze which made it very pleasant to play as
the scores indicated. There were only four strokes between first and last.
Disappointingly there were five no shows which upset the draw.
As from Jan 1st we will be moving to The Olde
9th hole, upstairs in the shopping mall at La Marquesa. The AGM will be held
there on Monday 8t h Jan 2007 at 8pm. Will all members who cannot attend please
telephone Ian Henderson on 966 716 616 or 636 116 230 as soon as possible.

Report: 10-02-2007
Last
weekend twenty-four teams competed in our first Winter Rinks Competition
sponsored by Bancaja. The Quesada Club and our sponsors would like to
thank all the competitors for making this inaugural event such a success.
Even the weather was kind to us, although it was rather cold on the
first day, as it gradually got better as the tournament progressed with the
semis and final played in warm sunshine. Rick Wills will have some photographs
elsewhere in the paper so I shall just cover one or two of the games.
In
Group A La Siesta’s Tony Pilling sailed through the first four rounds to secure
his place in the semis, and the story was similar in Group B where Quesada’s
John Muldoon won all his five games. Group C turned out to be the most
competitive group where Jackie Breslin’s Albir team was on the verge of going
out of the tournament until, with his last wood of the game. Jackie killed the
end and on the re-spot picked up the two shots needed to defeat Nick Birch’s
Quesada team 7-6. Hard luck Nick! Group D looked cut and dried after the first
four rounds as John Cooper and his La Siesta quartet went into the last round
robin game with a 25 shot cushion over his nearest rival, Bill Young.. With
Bill Young’s team winning the La Siesta team must have been extremely worried to
find themselves 17-1 down after eight ends to Brian Duff and the Emerald Isle
team but they then managed to put a few shots on the board to eventually make it
through to the semis on shot difference.
The
semi-finals turned out to be rather one sided affairs as both La Siesta teams
seemed to carry their previous game form into the matches and were quite
comprehensively beaten; Tony Pilling losing 20-3 to Jackie Breslin and John
Cooper losing 19-10 to John Muldoon. The final was a much closer affair for the
first ten ends as the Albir team went into a five shot lead only to be pegged
back by the Quesada outfit who then went into a 6-5 lead. At 11-8 to Jackie it
was still anybody’s game but a good finish by his team saw the match conceded on
the penultimate thirteenth end. Well done and congratulations to the Albir team
of Tony McKenna, Irene Newth, David Newth and Jackie Breslin. Well done and
commiserations to John Muldoon and his team of Tina Brinton, Brian Trinder and
Terry Heath.
With
several of the regular players missing through injury, illness, hospital
appointments etc. the Winter League selectors are having a tough time and
this has been reflected in the results over the last month or so. Another heavy
10-0 defeat at home to Benitachell and a 8-2 loss at Finca Guila has seen the
team pick up only 6 points from the last four games and slip from a respectable
mid-table position before Christmas to the bottom of the league. Let us hope we
can get some stability back in the team and we can once again move up the table.
The
Southern League team fared little better this week when losing the top of
the table clash with La Siesta Blue by 11 points to 3.
Fortunately the SABA team saved the week with a very good win at
Greenlands by 8 points to 2, 85 shots to 56. The Friendly games resulted in 1
draw and a narrow loss by 1 shot.
Saturday saw us renewing friendships with
Indalo Bowls Club in our annual friendly match. The results went our way
winning on four rinks and losing on two. Following the match we all traveled to
La Marina to meet up with the players in the other match and a fine meal was
enjoyed by all. La Marina then entertained us with their resident cabaret act
‘Flanagan & Allen’ (alias Phil & Pete) which brought the house down.
In the Winter League on Wednesday we
traveled to El Cid and just managed to start the first end when the heavens
opened on flooded the green in minutes. After much discussion it was decided to
take an early lunch and see if the weather improved. It did, just, and we
managed to complete the match and we were able to record our first away win of
the season.
Rink 1. This game stuttered along as first
Quesada’s Brian Trinder, John Rudkin, John Muldoon and Graham Phillips took the
early lead only for El Cid’s Alan Phillips, Ian Phillips, Adrian Lambert and
Derek Eldon to move in front. A five shot haul on the fourteenth end saw
Quesada leading 18-12 but on the seventeenth end the roof fell in as they
dropped seven shots to hand the win to El Cid 18-22.
Rink 3. For Quesada Dianne Riley, Robbie
Scott, George Radmore and Bob Boby against Roy Dingle, Jan Marks, Stan Stansmore
and John Cruttenden. These two teams slugged it out for seventeen ends with El
Cid leading 13-14 and then, with El Cid holding one shot for the win, skipper
John’s last wood moved the jack just enough to leave Bob’s team holding two
shots to take the win 15-14.
On Rink 5 June McMillan, David Bourne, John
Jones and Nick Birch could not match Lynne Eldon, Vernon Graham, Vic Wraight and
John Rawlings as the home team adapted better to the conditions and steadily
drew away running out 9-19 winners.
Rink 6. June Cox, Violet Campbell, Joe Riley
and Ian Campbell overwhelmed the home team of Paul Trunchion, Pauline Wraight,
Jackie Golliot and Ian Baron. With several five shot hauls during the match
they eventually ran out convincing winners 35-7.
This gave Quesada the overall win of 77 shots
to 60 and a 6 points to 4 victory.
On Wednesday the Southern League team
resumed their rain affected match against top of the league Emerald Isle
Diamonds and they must have heeded last week’s words of the Captain, who
incidentally missed the match having to return to the UK, and produced an
excellent display to win the match 13 points to 1. Very well done everyone!
The SABA team had an entirely different
result going down on all rinks at San Miguel.
Come on, live the dream.
